In February, Montez Press was part of Material Art Fair’s ‘Reading Material’, their program dedicated to books. We presented our newest release, Heike-Karin Foell’s SPEED, with a discussion between Anna and Tom on Heike’s practice of making books for indexing texts, marks, calligraphy and images which inform and complicate her paintings. Tom talked about other instances of artists reconciling text with abstraction and how critical writing and art have always relied on each other to derive value from the absurd. He recounted a history of artists evading the pinning down of art in writing, from Franz Kline's painted telephone books and Broodthaers’ poetry books encased in plaster, to a recent Michael Krebber show that copied the contents of his students critical art blogs onto canvases. Anna, in turn, reminded us of the role of women in the history of modern painting, delving into the mysticism and transcendental philosophy of Hilma af Klint. The launch ended with a dinner with friends, artists, and gallerists in a beautiful restaurant situated in an old Roma Norte mansion.
